Background Information

I am Gunnvor, a female fighter in the SCA.  I include the word “female” in the description because I have discovered that as much as I would like to just categorize myself as a fighter, the fact that I’m female DOES make a difference.  It seems to be making a difference in my fighting style, my attitude, and even, occasionally, in the way people choose to fight me.  I do heavy armored combat — mainly sword and shield, but have a pole arm that I play with too.

I started fighting in college in 2000.  I fought for about a year, went to Pennsic XXX, and then stopped fighting often.  I stopped in to fight practice a few times a year. I didn’t actually start attending regular fight practices again until 2008 or so. Even then there were months in there that I didn’t go at all. I’ve been trying to step up my game recently.

I have been squired to Duke Omega (formerly known as Duke Darius) in the East Kingdom since Pennsic XL.

I would GREATLY encourage positive comments and constructive criticism from anyone who reads my ramblings!

  1. I’m starting a 30 Day Challenge (for the next 30 days in a row I will work on heavy fighting – no exceptions) to rev up my own heavy fighting practice. Part of my regular studies and practice will include reading from your blog – call it my regular inspirational pep-talk. Thanks for writing!

Hope to meet you on the field,
    Alfrun 🙂

    • Thats AWESOME!!! If you aren’t sure what to do or if you have any questins, I’d be happy to help!

  2. Wow, the sport you do looks awesome! I haven’t seen any heavy combat clubs like yours where I stay but I will be looking for some for sure! It looks like great fun. Keep training. Women can be great at combat sports. I train with a normal woman (not overly big or strong) in my MMA training and she can hit so hard that I’ve seen her literally break guys mentally.

  3. Hi, Guv! I just stumbled on your site. I have a friend who wants to fight heavy weapons in the SCA and she is just starting out. I’m not a fighter, but I’m all for supporting her in her efforts. It’s great to see she won’t be alone in her quest to set the guys straight.

I’ll definitely be sharing your site and reading it quite a bit myself. I need all the advice I can get on how to be supportive and helpful. If you have any tips, please send them along to me privately.

Keep up the good work, congratulations on the upcoming free-er time, and HUZZAH for all your efforts.

  4. “the arm strength to throw a shot that’s hard enough to kill people”

Here’s a hint: This guy doesn’t know the first thing about how to throw a shot.

    Go here: and learn.

Also, Some of the best training is done without your armour on, so don’t let that stop you.

  5. Just wanted to say that I’ve just started fighter practice and you’re sort of my heroine. Thank you for writing this blog!
